Immersive Iceland: A Four-Day Road Trip Adventure in South Iceland
Halló og velkomin! 🇮🇸
Hello and welcome!
Iceland is a place that is like no other; it truly feels like it is a completely different planet. Even though this itinerary is only 4 days and only in the south, you will still see so much that Iceland has to offer. As you explore the rugged terrain, you will also be disobeying TLC by chasing waterfalls. 😜
From the iconic falls of Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss to the hidden gem of Gljúfrabúi, where the thrill of walking behind the veil of water awaits, every waterfall promises awe-inspiring moments and photo opportunities.
I hope you are ready to immerse yourself in the raw beauty of Iceland's wilderness, surrounded by the soothing sound of rushing waterfalls!
So, put on your waterproof gear, grab your camera, and set out on an unforgettable journey through Iceland's enchanting landscapes, where the allure of this island beckons you at every turn.
Important Notes about this Itinerary:
Midnight Sun Experience: If you're visiting during the midnight sun, remember to pack eye masks for better sleep, as the sun doesn't set during this time. However, you can advantage of the extended daylight hours for more activities during the day!
Download Maps Ahead of Time: Before you embark on your journey, download maps of all your routes. This is especially important if you don't plan on getting an international data plan. Google Maps allows you to save maps offline, ensuring you can navigate even without internet access.
Vegan-Friendly Options: Throughout your journey, I'll make sure to highlight vegan dining options available in the areas you'll be exploring.
Camping Culture: Iceland is exceptionally camping and campervan friendly, with many people setting up camp near stunning waterfalls.
Weather Preparedness: Be equipped with waterproof boots, pants, and a jacket, as well as a waterproof protector for your camera and phone. Iceland's weather can be unpredictable, so it's essential to stay dry, especially if you plan on capturing the beauty of waterfalls as you can get wet near them.
Snack Essentials: As Reykjavik is the largest city and other areas are relatively remote, make sure to stock up on snacks for your journey. Having provisions on hand will ensure you're prepared for any adventure that comes your way.
Ring Road Exploration: The Ring Road is Iceland's main thoroughfare that circles the entire island. It's well-maintained and offers access to some of the country's most scenic landscapes.
Golden Circle Considerations: During the summer months, the Golden Circle can get crowded with tour groups. Keep this in mind as you plan your visit, and consider arriving early to beat the crowds.
Safe Drinking Water: Enjoy the convenience of Iceland's natural springs by drinking tap water, which is 100% safe. Remember to bring a reusable water bottle and refill it whenever you have the chance; you can even refill from some streams!
Download Maps: Ensure seamless navigation by downloading maps ahead of time. This way, you'll have access to directions even in remote areas without internet connection.
Rent a Car from the Airport: To maximize flexibility and convenience, rent a car directly from the airport. The rental location is conveniently located nearby, so close you can walk to the car rental places from the airport, allowing you to hit the road and start exploring.

DAY ONE: Reykjavik (Airport) to Vik
Arriving in Reykjavik, your first task is to secure your rental car from the airport. With wheels at your disposal, it is time to embark on the journey ahead!
Whether you're leaving directly from the airport or Reykjavik, ensure you've had a meal before setting off on your adventure!
Personal Note: I prefer taking overnight flights so that I can arrive early and start exploring right away, saving valuable time! Additionally, if leaving from the States overnight flights are typically the only ones to choose from anyway.
Seljalandsfoss: This mesmerizing waterfall along Iceland's southern coast, awaits your arrival and is your first Icelandic waterfall! Seljalandsfoss captivates visitors with its sheer beauty and immersive experience. What sets this waterfall apart is the unique opportunity to walk behind the cascading curtain of water, providing an exhilarating perspective unlike any other. As you walk along the path leading to the falls, prepare to be enchanted by the misty embrace and the ethereal play of light and shadow. To fully embrace the elements, be sure to wear your waterproof gear!
Estimated Time: 30 minutes
Gljúfrabúi Waterfall: Hidden within a moss-covered canyon, Gljúfrabúi Waterfall beckons the adventurous traveler to discover its secluded beauty. To reach Gljúfrabúi, you'll walk there from Seljalandsfoss, venturing through a narrow cleft in the rock and wading across a shallow stream. As you navigate the rocky terrain and step into the cool embrace of the cavern, a sense of wonder washes over you.
Personal Note: Navigating the path to Gljúfrabúi Waterfall demands proper attire! I saw numerous people in ordinary clothes and shoes; I personally wouldn’t have gone in without suitable gear. Also keep in mind that the pathway is somewhat narrow and can quickly become congested, requiring patience as you wait for others to navigate through, and you must also walk through a stream. So, heed this advice: come prepared with waterproof attire and sturdy footwear!
Estimated Time: 15 minutes
Skogafoss Waterfall: Skogafoss Waterfall is a towering cascade that commands attention as it plunges dramatically into the pool below. As you approach, the thundering roar of the waterfall really shows you the raw power of this natural wonder. While the sight from below is awe-inspiring, the real adventure awaits those who dare to climb the stairs that ascend alongside the waterfall. Be warned, though – conquering these stairs requires determination. So, take your time, catch your breath, and prepare to be captivated by the breathtaking spectacle of Skogafoss.
Estimated Time: 30 minutes - 1.5 hour (if you plan to go up the stairs)
Kvernufoss Waterfall: A hidden gem waiting to be discovered, this waterfall beckons with its secluded beauty and untouched charm. A short walk through scenic surroundings leads you to the cascading waters, where you can immerse yourself in the peaceful ambiance and marvel at nature's masterpiece. Though lesser-known than its counterparts, Kvernufoss captivates with its understated elegance and invites you to experience a moment of quiet reflection amidst Iceland's majestic scenery.
Estimated Time: 1 hour
From here, you have the option to stay in Vik or venture a bit further beyond as your next destination in the morning is about 50 minutes away from Vik.
However, before you depart Vik, it's wise to make a pit stop at a grocery store to replenish your supplies for dinner and breakfast, especially since you'll be heading into a more remote area. Krónan is a popular grocery store in Iceland with a location in Vik and has vegan options!
Personal Note: During our journey, we opted to stay in Kálfafell. It's conveniently located just 30 minutes away from the first stop in the morning and offers more budget-friendly accommodations compared to staying in Vik.
DAY TWO: Vik to Reykjavik
Get ready for another exhilarating day of exploration in Iceland!
Set your alarm bright and early to make the most of your time on the road (except if you’re there during the midnight sun it’s always bright😅).
Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon: This canyon is known for its stunning geological formations and winding river that is carved by glacial waters over thousands of years. The canyon features towering cliffs that offer panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. You can hike along the canyon rim, marveling at the sheer beauty of this rugged terrain, or explore the trails that lead down to the river below. With its dramatic scenery and peaceful atmosphere, Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts!
Personal Note: I highly recommend arriving early at Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon as parking space is limited. There are two parking lots, one at the bottom and another at the top, although access to the upper lot may require a 4x4 vehicle. From there, a paved path with roped-off sections leads to the viewpoint, offering a relatively easy hike with breathtaking vistas along the way. Opting for an early start also ensures you beat the crowds and have ample time to soak in the canyon's natural beauty undisturbed!
Estimated Time: 1 - 2 hours
Now, it's time to head back towards Vik!
Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach And Basalt Columns: Renowned for its striking black sand and dramatic basalt columns. The contrast between the dark sand, crashing waves, and geometric formations creates a mesmerizing sight.
Very Important Note: Please, please, please be cautious of the waves on this beach, also known as "sneaker waves”! These waves happen unexpectedly and are extremely powerful. There have been many instances here where people have gotten swept off into the ocean by these waves.
Estimated Time: 30 minutes - 1 hour
Reyniskirkja: This is a picturesque church right by Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. With its stunning backdrop of the rolling mountains, visiting Reyniskirkja offers both scenic views and a glimpse into the local architecture.
Estimated Time: 10 - 15 minutes
On the way back into town, this is the perfect time to take a break and indulge in a meal before continuing your Icelandic adventure!
Vegan Options in Vik:
Black Crust Pizzeria
Smiðjan Brugghús
Sudur
The Soup Company
Vik i Myrdal Church: This captivating landmark offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes and the iconic Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. This quaint church, set against the dramatic backdrop of rugged cliffs and crashing waves, is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of the rich cultural heritage of Iceland. If you are lucky enough to be here during the summer, enjoy the fields of Lupine surrounding the church!
Estimated Time: 15 - 30 minutes
Dyrhólaey and Dyrhólaey Lighthouse: Located on Iceland's south coast, you will be granted with panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes and the vast Atlantic Ocean. At its peak sits the iconic Dyrhólaey Lighthouse, a historic beacon guiding ships along the rugged coastline. The dramatic cliffs of Dyrhólaey provide a stunning backdrop, with sheer drops plunging into the ocean below. You can marvel at the sheer beauty of the scenery, soak in the fresh sea air, and capture breathtaking photographs of this remarkable natural wonder.
Please note that reaching the lighthouse involves navigating a narrow and steep road, but it is well worth it!
Estimated Time: 30 minutes
After a day filled with awe-inspiring natural wonders and scenic drives, it's time to return to Reykjavik for the evening.

DAY THREE: Golden Circle
Get ready for another exhilarating day as you embark on a journey around the legendary Golden Circle!
Before hitting the road, fuel up with breakfast to give you the energy you'll need for the adventures ahead.
This iconic route is packed with breathtaking sights and unforgettable experiences, so make sure to pack plenty of snacks to keep you fueled throughout the day and get ready to soak in the stunning Icelandic landscapes, and prepare for a day of unforgettable exploration.
Here is a list of attractions along the circle:
Thingvellir National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can walk between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. It's a must-visit for its geological and historical significance.
Personal Note: Aim to arrive early to beat the crowds, especially during peak tourist seasons.
Estimated Time: 30 minutes - 2 hours (depends on if you want to just take pictures or hike!)
Bruarfoss Waterfall: A hidden gem with stunning blue waters, Bruarfoss offers a serene setting amidst Iceland's rugged landscapes. While not as large as other waterfalls, it makes up for it with it’s vibrant blue color!
This is accessible via a short hike or a nearby (paid) parking lot, Bruarfoss boasts crystal-clear water that you can drink straight from the river. Don't miss the chance to fill up your reusable water bottle!
If you want to hike along this river and see additional waterfalls, be sure to start the Brúará Trail where it will end at Bruarfoss Waterfall.
Very Personal Note: My childhood best friend got engaged here! 🥹💍
Estimated Time: 30 minutes - 3 hours (if you plan to hike)
Geysir Hot Spring: Witness the spectacular eruption of Strokkur, one of Iceland's most active geysers, shooting boiling water high into the air. Explore the geothermal area and marvel at the bubbling mud pots and steaming vents.
Here would also be a great place to stop for lunch as there is a large visitor center that offers food, and also has excellent vegan options (this is where we ate)!
Estimated Time: 30 minutes (or more if you plan to eat here)
Gullfoss Waterfall: One of Iceland's most iconic waterfalls, Gullfoss cascades in two tiers into a deep canyon, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. Feel the power of nature as you stand in awe of this majestic waterfall.
Estimated Time: 30 minutes
Blue Lagoon: End your day with relaxation at the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa renowned for its milky-blue waters rich in minerals like silica and sulfur. Indulge in a rejuvenating soak amidst Iceland's volcanic landscapes.
Remember to book your tickets in advance to secure your spot at this popular attraction on their official website.
Additional Tips for Blue Lagoon:
For those with hair, remember to either tie it up or apply conditioner before entering the pool, as the minerals can have an undesirable effect on your hair!
Always use a protective case for your phone if you bring it in the pool, and make sure it's secured to you somehow. We witnessed a girl accidentally drop her phone in the pool, which is very murky, and the lifeguard informed her that they couldn't assist in retrieving it.
Personal Note: Being there during the Midnight Sun, we decided to visit at 9:00 pm after exploring the Golden Circle. This timing allowed us to return to Reykjavik to gather our belongings and enjoy dinner before heading out to the Blue Lagoon. Additionally, I do know a lot of people also do this as soon as they get to Iceland or before they leave since it is near the airport.
Estimated Time: 1 - 2 hours
Head back into Reykjavik for the night!
DAY FOUR: Day in Reykjavik
Take advantage of this time to soak up the vibrant atmosphere of Iceland's capital city and tick off any remaining items on your travel bucket list.
Personal Note: We flew out late in the day to fly for the second part of our trip in Norway. Booking a late flight out allowed us to make the most of our last day in Iceland by spending it exploring Reykjavik before flying out.
Here is how you can spend time in Reykjavik:
Hallgrímskirkja: This iconic church dominates Reykjavik's skyline with its unique design inspired by Icelandic landscapes. Visitors can take an elevator to the top for panoramic views of the city and surrounding mountains.
Perlan (The Pearl): Situated atop Öskjuhlíð Hill, Perlan is a futuristic glass dome housing a museum, observation deck, and rotating restaurant. It offers stunning views of Reykjavik and beyond.
Harpa Concert Hall: Known for its striking architecture, Harpa hosts concerts, events, and exhibitions. Its glass façade reflects Iceland's ever-changing light and is a popular spot for photography.
National Museum of Iceland: Explore Iceland's history and culture through exhibits showcasing artifacts and displays spanning from settlement to modern times.
Tjörnin (The Pond): This picturesque lake in the heart of Reykjavik is surrounded by parks and walking paths. It's a popular spot for birdwatching and leisurely strolls.
Old Harbor: Wander around Reykjavik's historic harbor area, lined with colorful buildings, seafood restaurants, and shops. You can also book whale watching tours or explore the maritime museum.
Laugavegur: Reykjavik's main shopping street is a hub of activity, featuring boutique stores, cafes, bars, and street art. It's a great place to soak up the city's atmosphere and pick up souvenirs.
Sun Voyager Sculpture: Located along Reykjavik's waterfront, this stainless steel sculpture resembles a Viking ship and symbolizes the spirit of discovery and adventure.
Reykjavik City Hall: Explore exhibitions on Reykjavik's history and culture, as well as interactive displays featuring maps and geological information about Iceland.
Whale Watching Tours: Reykjavik's harbor offers opportunities for whale watching excursions to see majestic marine life such as whales, dolphins, and seabirds in their natural habitat.
Personal Note: If you're interested in a whale watching tour, please ensure that the tour you choose is ethical, as some may support whaling and the consumption of whale meat.
As you prepare to bid farewell to Iceland, cherish the memories of your unforgettable journey through its natural wonders. Whether you're heading home or embarking on your next adventure, take a moment to reflect on the beauty and serenity of Iceland – a land like no other.
Until we meet again, Iceland awaits your return with open arms. Safe travels and may your adventures continue to inspire and enrich your soul!
