Personal Note: Our visit to the Norwegian Folk Museum was a delightful surprise! Its vastness and immersive exhibits made it one of our favorite stops, although do keep in mind it's primarily outdoors, so plan accordingly for weather conditions.

From mesmerizing landscapes to iconic pieces like Edvard Munch's "The Scream," the gallery offers a comprehensive journey through artistic expression across various genres and periods.

Akershus Fortress: Transport yourself back in time at Akershus Fortress, a medieval stronghold overlooking Oslo and its picturesque harbor. Wander through centuries-old halls, ramparts, and dungeons, and soak in panoramic views that blend history with modern urban life, creating a memorable experience for history enthusiasts and sightseers alike.

DAY TWO: Oslo to Bergen

Today will be dedicated to the enchanting train journey from Oslo to Bergen via train!

Though it spans the entire day with a 7-hour duration, the experience is immensely rewarding. Embarking on this scenic voyage is akin to entering a picturesque wonderland. 

As the train meanders through Norway's captivating landscapes, passengers are treated to awe-inspiring views of verdant valleys, majestic mountains, and tranquil fjords. Renowned as one of the world's most scenic train rides, this route reveals glimpses of cascading waterfalls, quaint villages, and pastoral countryside scenes. 

Whether you're a nature aficionado, a photography enthusiast, or simply seeking relaxation, the Oslo to Bergen train journey ensures an unforgettable odyssey through Norway's natural splendor at every twist and turn.

Booking tickets early is crucial due to high demand! You can book this through Norway in a Nutshell in addition to the train ride and cruise for the next day!

Upon arriving in Bergen, check in to your accommodation and embrace the city's charm on foot. 

Bergen is highly walkable, making it effortless to explore its delights at a leisurely pace. Take in the sights, sounds, and flavors of the city as you meander through its picturesque streets.

DAY THREE: Bergen to Flåm (and back)

Today's itinerary takes you on an enchanting journey from Oslo to Flåm, followed by a ferry ride back to Bergen, all arranged through Norway in a Nutshell for seamless travel.

Since you'll be out all day, remember to pack snacks for the journey!

The train departs just before 9 am, heading towards its first stop, Myrdal, where you'll transfer to the historic Flåm Railway. This renowned train journey, celebrated as one of the world's most beautiful, winds from the end of Aurlandsfjord to Myrdal station, showcasing Western Norway's stunning landscapes along the way.

Personal Note: The transition at Myrdal to the Flåm Railway is straightforward, with no need to rush across platforms. However, securing good seats on the Flåm Railway is competitive. Personally, I stood between the carts the entire time so I could stand at a window and take as many pictures as I wanted!

Arriving in Flåm, nestled amidst dramatic fjords and mountains, you'll enjoy lunch, but expect a wait due to the influx of visitors. Flåm's compact size and breathtaking beauty attract numerous tourists, especially from cruise ships, creating a bustling yet charming atmosphere.

After a satisfying lunch, you'll have about 3 hours to explore Flam before having to get onto the ferry, and here are some exciting options:

Kayaking: Experience the fjords up close with a kayaking adventure, immersing yourself in the serene waters and majestic surroundings.

Electric Minibus to Stegastein Viewpoint: Hop on an electric minibus for a scenic journey to the iconic Stegastein viewpoint, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the fjords and mountains.

Flåm Railway Museum: Delve into the history and engineering marvels of the Flam Railway at the museum, perfect for train enthusiasts and history buffs.

Leisurely Stroll and Shopping: Spend time leisurely walking around Flam, exploring its charming streets, quaint shops, and soaking in the local ambiance.

It's crucial to arrive at the ferry line on time as they strictly adhere to their schedule and won't wait for late passengers. Plan ahead and ensure you're at the designated boarding area well before departure time to avoid any delays or missed opportunities during your journey.

While the train ride to Flåm was stunning, the ferry journey through the fjords was beyond words. The ferry offers ample indoor and outdoor seating, allowing you to enjoy the breathtaking views as you please. It makes stops at picturesque towns along the way, adding to the enchanting experience of witnessing life nestled within the fjords, akin to a scene from a magical Disney movie come to life.

Personal Note: We secured indoor seats next to a window to shield ourselves from the chilly wind. But we often stepped outside to admire the sights and capture memorable photographs!

As the ferry returns you to Bergen, be prepared for the iconic view of Bryggen greeting you upon arrival. Take a moment to soak in this picturesque sight before heading to grab a bite to eat. Enjoy a delicious meal in Bergen's charming surroundings, savoring local flavors and cuisines, before settling in for a cozy evening in the city.


DAY FOUR: Day in Bergen

For a memorable ending to your Bergen trip, consider taking a late flight and dedicating your morning to exploring this charming city:

Mount Fløyen: Begin your day by experiencing Fløibanen, an essential Bergen attraction. It's one of Norway's most visited sites, located in the heart of the city. Opt for a funicular ride or hike up to Mount Fløyen early in the morning to enjoy breathtaking views over Bergen. Various walking paths around the mountain offer picturesque routes to explore.

Bryggens Museum: Immerse yourself in Bergen's rich history by visiting Bryggens Museum, where exhibits showcase the city's cultural heritage and maritime past.
