Highland Dreams Road Trip: A 7-Day Odyssey Through the Scottish Highlands and Isle of Skye
Are you ready to embark on a journey through one of the most mesmerizing landscapes on Earth?
Well you better be ready, because we are heading into the Scottish Highlands and The Isle of Skye!
The Scottish Highlands, situated in the northwestern part of Scotland, are renowned for their breathtaking scenery, rich history, and vibrant culture. Here, rugged mountains, rolling hills, and sparkling lochs create a stunning backdrop filled with wildlife and natural wonders.
Nestled off the west coast of Scotland, the Isle of Skye awaits, offering a treasure trove of natural beauty that enchants travelers from around the globe. With its awe-inspiring vistas, deep historical roots, and lively cultural scene, Skye promises an unforgettable adventure for anyone exploring Scotland.
The journey through the highlands to reach Skye is nothing short of magical—each twist and turn reveals breathtaking panoramic views that will leave you in awe. As you navigate the winding roads through picturesque villages, towering mountains, and shimmering lochs, take your time and drive safely to fully savor the beauty of the journey.
Exploring these regions offers opportunities to visit ancient castles and ruins, hike through stunning landscapes, or unwind with a pint in a cozy pub. Whether your passion lies in nature, history, or culture, there's something here for everyone to enjoy!
In this itinerary, I will guide you through the best ways to spend your time road tripping around the highlands, including the enchanting Isle of Skye!
Things to Note About this Itinerary:
Weather Preparedness: Scotland's weather can be unpredictable. While we experienced mostly beautiful days in May, occasional rain showers occurred. Ensure you have waterproof attire handy and after a few minutes it will most likely pass!
Snacks and Car Travel: Bring snacks for long car journeys, as you'll spend considerable time on the road.
Starting and Ending Points: This itinerary begins in Glasgow and concludes in Edinburgh, offering a comprehensive journey through Scotland's highlights.
Road Realities (specifically for Isle of Skye): The main road, A87, connects the peninsulas, but closures can mean scenic detours, so plan accordingly. Be prepared for narrow roads and courteous passing!
Hiking: There are opportunities for hiking included in this itinerary, offering a chance to explore the stunning natural landscapes. However, it's essential to note that hiking is optional at most of these locations. So, when planning your adventures and timing your activities, consider the hiking options based on your group's preferences and fitness levels.
Things to Note about Scotland:
Parking: Expect to pay for parking in most places, with card payment widely accepted. Carry some coins as a few locations may require them.
Safety: Scotland is generally safe, and leaving belongings in the car posed no issues during our trip.
Driving Reminders:
Remember to drive on the left side of the road in Scotland. If you're not accustomed to this, consider renting an automatic car for ease of navigation.
On narrow streets with pull-offs, remember that you have the right of way when the pull-off is on the right side, ensuring smooth traffic flow and safe passage.
For those from America, Scotland has a lot of roundabouts, so be sure to review the rules for navigating them, as they are less common in the States.
Road Conditions: Roads in Scotland are well-maintained, resembling highways for the most part, ensuring smooth travel experiences.
Friendly Locals: Scots are known for their friendliness and helpfulness, making your journey more enjoyable and after experiencing this country multiple times I can concur that this is true!
Favorite Destination: Scotland remains one of my favorite places, offering incredible experiences and breathtaking landscapes.
Best Time to Visit: I personally thought May was incredible! I have been in June and July with about the same kind of weather, but there were definitely less people in May. I would say to steer away from going into the Highlands during winter as most things are closed for the season and there isn’t as much daylight.
Vegan Options: Vegan dining options are surprisingly plentiful throughout the Highlands. The UK often labels vegan items clearly, simplifying snack stops and meal choices for vegan travelers!
I can't wait to share more about this incredible journey on my blog, so let's get into it!

The walk from the parking lot to the viewpoint takes about 15 minutes and is relatively easy, but wearing durable shoes is advisable due to rocky terrain, particularly when it's raining as it can get muddy. So, be prepared for a comfortable and enjoyable visit by dressing appropriately for the conditions.
